Compressing Scribus PDF files
Before…
The PDF file as written by Scribus is ~ 2.8 MB big. Acroread 7 displays it
like this:

After using pdftops -level3 to convert it to PostScript, and
then ghostscript (≥ 8.15) to distill back to PDF, the file is
~ 500kB and is rendered like this:
Note: xpdf displays the two files identically (and fine);
ghostview hangs while trying to antialias the first file, but
shows the compressed one fine.
